Your ITIN and U.S. mailing address are not enough by themselves for your own U.S. card while you live abroad; the verified routes require a genuine U.S. home or an actual move to the United States.

I am a non-resident living outside the US, but I have a US address and just got my ITIN. How can I obtain a US credit card?

Summary

Your ITIN is useful because some issuers accept it, so you do not necessarily need an SSN. The part you cannot substitute is a truthful home address: the clearest primary-card routes become available when you actually establish a U.S. home.

Your options depend on whether you will establish a real U.S. home and whether you already hold a qualifying American Express card.

Apply after moving to the U.S.after moving

Once the U.S. address is genuinely your home, use your for Capital One . Capital One says it has cards you may be able to obtain with an ITIN, but its ITIN guidance is expressly framed for people who live in the United States; the pre-approval form separately requests home and mailing addresses. (Capital One, 2026-04-30 and 2026-08-04.)

Transfer an existing Amex relationshipexisting Amex

If you move to the United States and your existing Amex was issued by American Express, you are the primary cardholder, and the account meets its three-month and good-standing rules, Global Card Transfer is a direct route. You must provide a U.S. home address, home phone, bank details, passport or SSN/ITIN, and employment details. (American Express Global Card Transfer.)

Use the current U.S. address as homenot enough

A mail-only U.S. address does not satisfy the verified Chase offer’s requirement for a valid . Capital One also asks separately for home and mailing addresses, so enter only your real residence in the home field. (Chase Terms & Conditions, 2026-05-05; Capital One, 2026-08-04.)

Join someone else’s Amex accountnot your account

This is not a route to your own primary account: an uses the basic member’s account, and that member remains liable. Amex asks for your name, address, birth date, and SSN or ITIN, but its U.S. FAQ does not confirm whether your foreign residence is accepted. (American Express Additional Card Member FAQ.)

Issuer rules differ: the cited Chase terms establish the rule for that offer, not a universal ban covering every U.S. issuer.

Watch out for

A tax number is not residence proofYour is a federal tax number; the IRS says it does not provide immigration status or serve as identification outside the federal tax system. It does not turn a mailing address into a U.S. home. (IRS ITIN page, updated 2025-10-28.)
Mailing address is not always a home addressChase’s general education page describes a U.S. resident using a U.S. mailing address, but a specific Chase offer’s Terms & Conditions require a valid in the United States or listed territories. Because you live abroad, do not report a mail-only, friend’s, or forwarding address as your home. (Chase Terms & Conditions, accurate 2026-05-05.)
Pre-approval is not the full applicationCapital One does not affect your credit scores, but proceeding with the application causes a and may temporarily lower them. (Capital One, updated 2026-08-04.)
Amex transfer is for an actual moveGlobal Card Transfer requires an eligible existing Amex account plus a U.S. home address, U.S. home phone, U.S. bank details, identity information, and employment details. It is not a workaround for someone who will continue living abroad. (American Express Global Card Transfer.)
An additional card is not your accountAn Amex uses the primary member’s account, and the primary member remains responsible for all purchases. The issuer’s U.S. FAQ does not say whether it accepts a foreign residential address for that member.

Next steps

These steps avoid misreporting your residence and minimize unnecessary credit inquiries when you become eligible to apply.

Before any application

Classify your U.S. address honestly

If you do not live at the U.S. address, do not enter it in a home or residential-address field. There is no government form, fee, or deadline for this screening step; simply postpone the primary-card application while the issuer requires a U.S. home.

Requirements

Your actual foreign home address
The U.S. address and its real purpose: home, mailing, family, or forwarding

After the U.S. address becomes your home

Run Capital One pre-approval after moving

Use Capital One’s pre-approval page at https://www.capitalone.com/apply/credit-cards/preapprove/. Enter your ITIN where the form permits an SSN or ITIN. The page lists no filing deadline, and pre-approval does not affect your credit scores; the official page does not state a monetary pre-approval fee.

Requirements

Legal name
True home and mailing addresses
Email address and phone number
Date of birth
ITIN
Income and employment information

After pre-approval

Submit one full application only if the offer fits

Proceed from the pre-approval result to the selected card application. A full application creates a hard inquiry and may cause a slight, usually temporary score drop. There is no universal fee to state before the card is identified: annual fees and pricing depend on the specific offer shown, and no application deadline is published in the cited guidance.

Requirements

A pre-approved offer
Truthful income, employment, housing-cost, and address information
The offer’s displayed annual fee and APR

Alternative after moving

Use Global Card Transfer if you already qualify

Apply at https://www.americanexpress.com/en-us/company/about-us/moving-abroad/ and provide the existing account number. American Express states that processing takes 7–10 working days; the page states no transfer fee or application deadline, while the chosen card’s own pricing applies.

Requirements

Existing Amex issued by American Express
Primary-cardholder status
Card held at least three months and open in good standing
U.S. home address and home phone
U.S. bank-account details
Passport or U.S. SSN/ITIN
Employment details
