If your licence is not Canadian, bring your original passport unless you have an accepted U.S. photo ID; a Canadian licence depends on the club’s policy.

“Do high-end clubs in NYC accept a foreign driver's license as ID, or do I really have to carry my passport around?”

Summary

You do have passport-free options—this is not a passport-only rule. The key is separating New York’s alcohol-age ID rules from a particular club’s entry requirements. [1][2]

Your options depend on who issued your licence and whether you already have another accepted photo ID.

Licence issued outside CanadaBring passport

Your foreign licence is not on New York’s permitted alcohol-age ID list. Use a valid original passport instead: New York permits passports from any country, and Marquee’s published entry policy accepts them, subject to its operator’s stated restrictions. [1][2][3]

Canadian provincial licenceVenue dependent

A valid licence issued by a Canadian province is expressly permitted under New York’s alcohol-age ID law. However, Marquee’s published driver’s-licence list mentions U.S. states only—not Canada—so do not rely on a Canadian licence for Marquee; an original passport is the better-supported option there. [1][2]

Use an existing U.S. photo cardPassport-free

If you already have a valid U.S.-state driver’s licence or New York DMV , Marquee lists both as accepted originals. You can use one instead of your passport for identification there. [2]

Accepted age ID does not guarantee admission; Tao Group’s ticket terms expressly reserve admission discretion. [5]

Watch out for

A phone photo is not the originalMarquee requires original photo identification, so a passport photo or photocopy does not meet its published requirement. Buying a ticket does not replace ID: Tao Group’s ticket terms still require government-issued photo identification. [2][3]
The age requirement still appliesMarquee requires every guest to be 21 or older for entry—not just to buy drinks. A passport does not overcome that age restriction. [2]
IDNYC is not the DMV cardThe municipal IDNYC card does not authorize alcohol purchases. Do not confuse it with a New York DMV non-driver photo ID, which is on Marquee’s accepted list. [2][4]
Some passports face extra restrictionsTao Group’s published ticket terms reject handwritten passports and passports issued when you were a child or teen. Do not assume that a passport’s remaining validity overrides those stated restrictions. [3]

Next steps

Choose an accepted document first, then bring the physical original to the entrance.

Before leaving

Choose the ID that fits your case

For Marquee, choose your valid original passport, U.S.-state driver’s licence, New York DMV non-driver photo ID, or valid U.S. military ID. If your only alternative is a Canadian provincial licence, New York law permits it for alcohol-age evidence, but Marquee does not list it in its published entry policy. [1][2]

Requirements

A valid passport or another accepted photo ID
For Marquee: you must be 21 or older

At the door

Bring the physical original

Do not substitute a phone photo, photocopy, or IDNYC card for the original accepted document. Marquee requires original photo identification, and Tao Group’s ticket terms require government-issued photo ID even when you have bought a ticket. [2][3][4]

Do bars in NYC accept foreign ID?

u/No_Cress9729r/AskNYCMar 27, 2026

Officially the state liquor authority requires a US or Canadian driver's license/non-drivers ID, a US federal ID such as a passport, green card or military ID, **or a foreign passport**. So technically, if you're not from the US or Canada you're expected to haul your passport around! In practice though, and being friends with several bouncers and having watched them do their craft, your foreign **physical** ID should work fine. At some bars I've seen every third or fourth ID be one of those pink European Union IDs. Just know they can deny you based on the official rules above.
