Beyond the four costs you named, budget roughly $625–$1,210 per month for health, communications, other utilities, insurance, household/personal spending and irregular expenses, plus move-in cash.

I am moving to UCLA as a postdoc with a net monthly salary of $4,800. I won't own a car. Apart from rent, food, electricity, and commuting, what other living costs or hidden expenses should I budget for?

摘要

Your no-car plan removes a major group of expenses, and UCLA’s 2026 postdoc medical contribution is modest for self-only coverage. The main surprise is not one giant bill but several small recurring lines plus move-in cash, so one separate monthly buffer makes the budget manageable.

Your core budget is the same in either case, but immigration status changes the insurance and one-time fee line.

Costs for every UCLA postdoccore budget

Plan for health-plan contributions and medical cost sharing, phone and internet, non-electric utilities your lease assigns to you, renter’s insurance, laundry, toiletries and household supplies, clothing and social life, plus an irregular-expense .

If you are J-1J-1 add-on

Add full-period insurance compliance for you and each J-2 dependent. UCLA requires postdocs to use ; if still unpaid and no exception applies, standard federal entry costs total $405: $220 for I-901 SEVIS plus $185 for the visa application.

If you are not J-1no J fees

Do not add J-specific SEVIS or visa-fee reserves. Keep the ordinary UCLA benefits, housing, utility, renter-insurance and tax-filing lines instead.

The dollar ranges below are SettleKit planning allowances, not quoted UCLA or Los Angeles prices, except where an exact official amount is identified.

Watch out for

Benefits deadline: 31 daysEnroll yourself and any eligible dependents in within 31 days of your appointment start. Missing that window can block benefits for the current plan year; for 2026, the monthly medical contribution is $15.35 HMO or $33.07 PPO for you alone, rising to $46.83 HMO or $100.87 PPO for you, a partner and children.
Do not subtract payroll deductions twiceBecause your $4,800 figure is net pay, use the amount that actually reaches your bank. If your appointment is Postdoctoral Scholar–Employee, title code 3252, the contract requires a 7.5% from gross salary; union membership is voluntary, but members authorize a $10 initiation fee and dues currently equal to 1.44% of gross pay. These should already be reflected in a true net-pay figure.
A deposit can reach two monthsCalifornia generally caps residential security at one month’s rent, but a qualifying small landlord—an individual, family trust or all-natural-person LLC owning no more than two rental properties and four units total—may charge up to two months. That exception does not apply to a prospective tenant who is a service member.
Electricity may not be the whole utility billIf your lease makes you responsible, budget separately for gas, water, sewer and trash. LADWP states that its opening bill can include a nonrefundable turn-on or transfer charge and that it bills for City Sewer Service Charges and Trash Fees; the official page does not publish the turn-on amount.
J-1 costs follow a different branchIf you are J-1, UCLA requires postdocs to enroll in , and your insurance must cover you and accompanying dependents throughout the period. If not already paid or exempt, the standard full I-901 SEVIS fee is $220 and the J-visa application fee is $185; the visa fee is waived for qualifying U.S.-government-sponsored exchanges.
Net withholding is not tax filingIf the IRS treats you as a nonresident alien engaged in a U.S. trade or business, you may need Form 1040-NR. Keep a modest tax-preparation or possible-balance reserve even though taxes are withheld from your paycheck.

下一步

These steps turn your $4,800 take-home pay into a budget that covers both normal months and the expensive first month.

Before subtracting new expenses

Confirm what “net $4,800” already includes

Use the bank-deposit amount, not gross salary. For title code 3252, the 7.5% Safe Harbor contribution is taken from gross pay; union membership is voluntary, but a member authorizes a $10 initiation fee and 1.44% of gross pay in dues. Do not deduct these again if the $4,800 is already after payroll withholding.

条件要求

UCLA appointment title code
First UCLA pay statement when issued
Union membership election, if any

Within 31 days of appointment

Enroll in PSBP

Enroll through the UC PSBP administrator at https://c2mb.ajg.com/uc/home. The 2026 monthly contribution is HMO $15.35 self-only or $46.83 with partner and children; PPO $33.07 self-only or $100.87 with partner and children. Both plans list a $1,500 individual/$4,500 family annual out-of-pocket maximum; keep a separate $75–$150 monthly planning reserve for copays, prescriptions and other medical spending.

条件要求

Appointment start date
Dependent details if covering family
Choice of HMO or PPO

Before signing the lease

Price the lease’s non-rent lines

Identify who pays gas, water, sewer, trash and internet, and whether renter’s insurance is required. Use planning allowances of $50–$120 for tenant-paid non-electric utilities, $80–$150 for phone plus home internet and $15–$30 for renter’s insurance. California generally limits security to one month’s rent, but a qualifying small landlord may collect two months; LADWP also places an unpriced, nonrefundable turn-on or transfer charge on the opening bill.

条件要求

Proposed lease
Utility addendum
Renter-insurance clause

Starting with your first paycheck

Create a monthly extras envelope

Use these SettleKit planning allowances: $75–$150 medical spending beyond the premium; $80–$150 phone/internet; $50–$120 non-electric utilities if tenant-paid; $15–$30 renter’s insurance; $90–$160 laundry, toiletries and household supplies; $150–$250 clothing, social life and subscriptions; and $150–$250 for irregular or annual costs. Including the official PSBP premium range gives roughly $625–$1,210 per month.

条件要求

Checking account or budgeting app
Automatic transfer date after payday

Before moving and then monthly

Fund one-time and annual costs separately

Hold separate cash for the security deposit, any application charge, the LADWP opening charge and furniture or kitchen basics; a $500–$1,500 setup allowance is a planning target rather than an official price. If you are a standard full-fee J-1 applicant and have not paid already, add $220 SEVIS plus $185 visa processing; qualifying government-sponsored J applicants owe no visa application fee. If you are a nonresident alien working in the United States, reserve for preparing Form 1040-NR.

条件要求

Immigration-status document
Lease move-in statement
Tax documents as received

Can I live in LA without a car?

I lived near campus for 4 years (the furthest I got was only 1.5 miles from campus in my last year). Assuming you’re staying close to campus, it’s not hard at all to get around!!
