Start at https://www.ssa.gov/number-card/request-number-first-time and use SSA's flow to self-schedule a local Social Security office or Card Center visit. The application is free; the 10-day recommendation concerns when you apply, so book now for a visit at least 10 days after arrival.

SSA's normal estimate is about two weeks after the application is complete and processable. If SSA must verify documents, it can take longer; when online DHS verification fails, SSA says DHS may take several weeks to respond.
When the card arrives
Give the SSN to your employer
Provide the number to payroll for wage reporting. You may start authorized L-1 employment while waiting because SSA does not require possession of an SSN before work begins.

If you are unable or choose not to apply for an SSN using one of the methods above, we recommend you wait 10 days after arriving in the United States to apply for an SSN. This will make it easier for us to verify your DHS documents online. This will also speed up the processing of your SSN application.

If you are not a U.S. citizen, we must see your current U.S. immigration document(s) and your foreign passport with biographical information or photograph. You must provide a current unexpired document issued to you by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) showing your immigration status, such as Form I-551, I-94, or I-766. We can only accept original documents or documents certified by the custodian of the original record.
