You can book now, but set the SSA application visit for at least 10 days after arrival; the card usually comes about two weeks after SSA has everything it needs.

I am entering the US on an L-1 visa. Do I really need to wait 10 days after entry to get a Social Security appointment so the systems sync, and how long does it usually take for the card to arrive after the appointment?

摘要

SSA phrases the 10-day wait as a recommendation meant to improve DHS verification, so the practical move is to book now and time the application visit correctly. If your shows L-1, SSA treats it as work-authorized evidence, and SSA does not require you to possess the SSN before you start work.

Watch out for

Wait to apply—not to bookSSA's February 2026 publication says it "recommend[s]" waiting 10 days after U.S. arrival to apply when you are not using an immigration-form SSN route. The wording applies to the application, not to scheduling, so you may book now but choose an office visit at least 10 days after arrival.
The two-week clock can start laterSSA says the card should arrive about two weeks after it has everything needed to process the application—not automatically two weeks after you sit for the appointment. If SSA must verify a document, it can take longer; SSA warns that unsuccessful online DHS verification may take several weeks.
Your I-94 is keyCurrent SSA POMS treats an I-94 showing principal L-1 status as employment-authorized evidence, even if you do not have a separate EAD. Make sure the I-94 is current and shows L-1.
Copies are not enoughBring your current immigration document, unexpired foreign passport, and birth certificate. Form SS-5 accepts originals or copies certified by the record custodian—not ordinary photocopies or notarized copies.

These steps reduce the chance of a DHS-system mismatch and get your SSN application completed with the right evidence.

After U.S. entry

Confirm your I-94 shows L-1

Check that the admission record is current and lists L-1. SSA POMS treats an I-94 showing L-1 as employment-authorized evidence even when there is no separate EAD.

条件要求

Current I-94
Unexpired foreign passport

You may book immediately

Start the SSN application and book the visit

Start at https://www.ssa.gov/number-card/request-number-first-time and use SSA's flow to self-schedule a local Social Security office or Card Center visit. The application is free; the 10-day recommendation concerns when you apply, so book now for a visit at least 10 days after arrival.

条件要求

A visit date at least 10 days after arrival

At the office visit

Take original documents to the appointment

Present originals or issuing-agency-certified copies. Do not rely on ordinary photocopies or notarized copies; Form SS-5 requires current immigration evidence and a foreign passport, and generally requires birth evidence.

条件要求

Current I-94 showing L-1
Unexpired foreign passport
Foreign birth certificate, if available

After SSA has everything it needs

Allow about two weeks for the card

SSA's normal estimate is about two weeks after the application is complete and processable. If SSA must verify documents, it can take longer; when online DHS verification fails, SSA says DHS may take several weeks to respond.

When the card arrives

Give the SSN to your employer

Provide the number to payroll for wage reporting. You may start authorized L-1 employment while waiting because SSA does not require possession of an SSN before work begins.

条件要求

Your issued Social Security number

SSA Pub. No. 05-10096

SSA recommends the 10-day post-arrival wait for the office application route and explains that it helps DHS document verification.

SSA Pub. No. 05-10096

If you are unable or choose not to apply for an SSN using one of the methods above, we recommend you wait 10 days after arriving in the United States to apply for an SSN. This will make it easier for us to verify your DHS documents online. This will also speed up the processing of your SSN application.
